OSPA was founded in 2009 and became a CV registered charity in 2011. Our rehoming centre was created in 2015. We later also became a UK registered charity in August 2023.

ABOUT US

- We have the capacity to home 60 dogs and we currently have 66 in residence.

- We don’t have facilities for cats at our rehoming centre currently but we help cats around the island.

- Many of our dogs are harness trained and love to go for walks with visitors..

Does OSPA work with other charities on the island?

There are currently 3 registered animal charities on Sal, including OSPA. Whilst we all have animal welfare at the heart of what we do, we are all totally independent charities and work individually with different missions and focus (albeit very similar ones) but under different circumstances and conditions.

OSPA’s mission is to care for and improve the quality of life for sick, injured, abused or neglected dogs and cats, assist with education and neutering to fight against overpopulation and to provide care, protection, treatment and security for those animals in need.

Do you help the dogs and cats on the beaches and in the hotels?

The community animals are mostly well looked after by tourists (fed and watered), some have owners, some are free roaming. OSPA will step in to help should one of them become ill or injured and we will do our best to ensure neutering is carried out where possible.

If I want to adopt one of the beach dogs, is this possible and can OSPA look after them until they can go to their new home?

Unfortunately not. We do not have the capacity at our rehoming centre to do this, even if the costs are covered. As mentioned, some of the beach dogs are already owned anyway.

January 13th 2024 - Democracy Day.

Also the day we raise our voice against the recent poisonings of our beloved furry friends.

Cabo Verde portrays itself as "Ilhas de Morabeza/ Morabeza Islands" - which is about tranquility and a peace with one another. So we wonder, is the Morabeza only limited to people?

From living within the community we know it's not. Many locals live in harmony with the animals around them.

But unfortunately cruelty exists all around the world, in all shapes and forms, including in Cabo Verde.

January 13th 2024 was the day we scream 'STOP' to the atrocities happening on the islands.

There are no justifications for these barbaric actions.

A law exists and this law must be upheld and applied, no exceptions!

All the innocent victims and their guardians deserve justice.

We invite all our animal loving friends on Sal to attend today's protest and help us put strength in numbers.

" We would love to see #CaboVerdePoisonFree "

Together against cruelty in Cabo Verde!
